Gambling: threat or menace?
I'm one of those aging boomers who read the humor magazine "National Lampoon" in the 1970s. One of their famous tongue-in-cheek headlines was "Pornography: threat or menace."
I couldn't help but think of that as I heard Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher talk about all the reasons to be against casino gambling during an appearance in Covington on Thursday. Either that, or Fletcher could have been fighting against bringing pool ("That's a capital 'P' and that rhymes with 'T,' which stands for trouble") to River City in "The Music Man."
But, sarcasm aside, the governor made some points I hadn't considered. Even if you're a gambling proponent, what he had to say should give you some pause.
Click here if you'd like to see Fletcher's presentation. It also includes his pitch on some issues such as health care and college tuition in Kentucky. This file can take some time to load, so be patient.

I'll lay odds it's a menace. 8/5
I worked in the casino industry for nearly nine years, and can tell you that a well-run casino is a gold mine. That said, if any state, like Kentucky or Ohio, consider legalizing casinos for the tax monies they would bring in, it would make much more sense to run them as state enterprises, with state employees, answering to a state commission. There are many, many people qualified to run state-owned casinos successfully, and ALL of the profits would accrue to the government. They would also have the power to lessen the impact on lower income people by capping losses, etc.
The state lotteries are government-run, so why not casinos?

oh, and it makes too much sense
Ernie Fletcher has a lot of nerve trying to attack Steve Beshear over gambling. Fletcher has flip-flopped on this issue, so who knows what his position will be by election day?
Gov. Ernie Fletcher has changed his position on casino gambling and says that, if re-elected, he will fight against a proposed constitutional amendment to allow it.
Until now, Fletcher has maintained that, while he personally opposes expanded gambling, voters should be allowed to decide the issue in a referendum.
Fletcher is desperately looking for ways to improve his polling numbers. Too late, Ernie!
Orlando, Florida has a higher crime rate than Las Vegas. Using Ernest's simplistic logic, Disney World is a source of that crime. I can see it now, "Ernest says Mickey Mouse promotes immorality!!" And next, Ernest, will you tell us about the crime waves in Indiana and Illinois centered around casino's there?
