Send Scooter to jail

The lawyer for I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby said Tuesday he didn’t know why his client was sentenced to jail because “the government did not establish the existence of an offense.”

Attorney William Jeffress must have been napping through the trial for Vice President Dick Cheney’s former chief of staff. The government quite clearly proved Libby guilty last March of one count of obstruction of justice, two counts of perjury to the grand jury and one county of lying to the FBI during its investigation into who leaked the name of CIA employee Valerie Plame to the news media.

The fact that no one was charged or convicted in connection with the actual leak is irrelevant. Libby knew what the truth was and he deliberately chose not to tell it in an effort to mislead investigators. He would have been much better off following the examples of Presidential adviser Karl Rove or former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, who did leak Plame’s name but were smart enough to tell the truth when put under oath about it.

Plame is the wife of former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, who publicly criticized the administration’s claims about intelligence reports used to justify the invasion of Iraq. Revealing Plame’s identity allegedly was done to blunt Wilson’s criticism under the theory that it would be assumed he was just expressing the views of disgruntled elements at the CIA.

U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton sentenced Libby to 2 ½ years in prison and fined him $250,000. “People who occupy these types of positions…have a special obligation to not do anything that might create a problem,” Walton said in passing sentence Tuesday.
Actually, Libby had the same obligation as any other citizen to tell the truth during a criminal investigation.

The judge said he saw no reason why Libby should remain free on appeal, although he postponed ruling on exactly when Libby should report to jail.

That brings up the dicey matter of a Presidential pardon. President Bush expressed sympathy for Libby’s family Tuesday. But presidents generally only make controversial pardons in the final days of their terms. Staying free on appeal could run the clock down to a pardonable moment. Walton shouldn’t let that happen.

Libby is guilty. He should go to jail.

David, you write quite definitively when meting out punishment for convicted criminals.

-Was Bill Clinton sentence adequate for perjury, forfeiting his law license for 5 years?
-Was Sandy Berger’s punishment severe enough for pleading guilty to stealing and stuffing his pants with top secret classified documents from the National Archives?
- What was Ted Kennedy’s punishment for killing Mary Jo Kopechne at Chappaquiddick?
- What about President Clinton's eleventh-hour pardon of fugitive financier Marc Rich?
- etc.

Your selective outrage is predictable.

Yeah dude! What about Teapot Dome?
Where's the outrage, hmm?

the wheels of justice have finally started turning. its unfortunate that this administration will make it a journey of a thousand miles.

the only thing worse than selective outrage is selective memory.

Libby was convicted of nothing. As anonymous said your selective outrage is utterly predictable, loser.

I agree with solorunner.

"Scooter" was NOT convicted! It's just the Commie media printing more lies!

O when will these far leftist thugs in the terrorist loving press tell us the truth?

Now, let us click our heels together 3 times for a final victory over evil! LOL

Yes indeed, the wheels of justice can be slow and selectively applied.

William Jefferson, US House of Rep was first officially investigated in July, 2005 on tape committing crimes. He only now, has been indicted June, 2007. First the Dems had to secure the election before the justice dept cronies proceeded.

1922 Tea Pot Dome, you go back a long way selective old-timer.

Yes, anon@9:50 AM

I'm old enough to remember the halcyon days of the conservative movement.

Way back when, before the whining neocons took over. You see, this current generation of conservative leadership consists of an assortment of former " full time hippies", (like Mr. Bronson) former Trotskyites ( such as Irving Kristol and Norman Podoritz) and former Dems.

They might have traded in their ideology, but old habits die hard and they can't quite stomach old conservative principles like accepting personal responsibility for one's actions. They prefer to admit nothing, deny everything and blame everything on anybody else.

I don't recall exactly when it became " conservative" to whine like a punk and blame others for your own mistakes but I think really got rolling in the 80's & 90's

AOA, you are correct that conservatives today are lacking leadership.

When you can't easily distinguish a "conservative" politician from a Liberal politician, you know you are missing conservative ideals.

True Conservatism will never lead by appeasing and forming consensus with Liberals. You will only end up with laws like the Kennedy/Bush education Bill, McCain/Feingold's Campaign Finance Reform, and the Bush/McCain/Kennedy immigration proposal.

You will always be frustrated if you attempt to equate the drive for political power with rational policy and thought.

anon@ 2:41 PM,

.. LOLOL ..Oh no, they're not lacking leadership. The so-called conservative base of today have more leadership than brains; they have leadership like The Little Rascals had leadership in Spanky and Alfalfa. I say " they" because I no longer include myself. No, that does not mean I am now a " secular progressive" or an "America hating far leftist". Believe it or not, there are other possibilities regardless of what Peter Bronson, Bill O'Reilly or Sean Hannity might say.

Scooter Libby is a convicted criminal, convicted by a jury of his peers. What offends me is that he wasn't appropriately tagged for outing a covert CIA agent. Libby is this year's Robert Hanssen and John Walker, a fellow traitor. 30 months isn't enough time for the treasonous scumbag named Scooter. ""This is a blow to Cheney. He is Cheney's Cheney. They say he could finish Cheney sentences, and now he's going to at Leavenworth." --Bill Maher"

Where's the outrage for William Jefferson? Barely mentioned in the paper- if it was a prominent republican, it would have been front page and lead story.

Libby became the liberals witch hunt scapegoat since their misguided dream to bring down the administration was going nowhere. Thanks Enquirer for drinking the kool-aid.

well the enquirer might be drinking kool aid but i'm sure theres a nice big plate of crow for you.

we have had a president and vice president that are criminals since the beginning of their term and its not front page news by any measure.

Bill Adkins if the facts start to matter to you its been proven and acknowledge by Richard L. Armitage that he "outed" Valerie Plame.

Not that the facts should matter to you.

The standards for democrats are much lower than for republicans.

Hillary avoided charges for her Rose Law Firm double-billing debacle and her overnight $400,000 options profit from a Chicago Buddy, when she and Bill were broke.
Harry Reid and family members have made multi millions on overnight land deals they bought in anticipation of Federal Highway Funding he was pushing through Congress.
Diane Feinstein has made millions through her family business from Federal programs she has passed to assist her California district.
Barbara Boxer passed homeland security measures that knowingly
enriched her husband with contracts for civil defense programs.
Nancy Pelosi stonewalled the William Jefferson investigation until after the election.
The list continues but no need to further bore everyone. This is just politics as usual.

anon 10:41 AM, June 07, 2007 -- well, well - what happened to the 'she wasn't covert' argument? Armitage was covering, IMO, for Libby. Libby's conviction was like Capone's - they didn't get him for what he did, but they got him anyway.

What's the point you people are trying make, -- "My crook is less crooked than your crook"?

Libby lied to FBI investigators ( they hate when that happens), he lied to a grand jury under oath.
No amount of spin in the world can change these facts.

Armitage and others involved told the truth. Libby is a lawyer and knows better. When attorneys commit perjury it really hacks-off a Judge more so than when your average Joe-Blow does the same.

Btw, this judge was appointed by George H. Bush. ( George The Elder)

Yes, many members of the media tend to be " Liberal" and vote Democrat. So what? I don't recall Dan Rather ever putting a gun to a Republicans head and forcing him to commit a crime.

Deal with it! But please stop whining about it and shifting blame.
If you consider yourself a " Conservative" then start being a Conservative and stop being a Rebublican.

AOA
What are the points?
- Politics is filled with corruption from politicians on both sides of the aisle.
- The present day Republican Party is not led by Conservatives.
- Dems are held to lower standards than Republicans. This is because they inherently pander and hold/set lower standards for their constituencies and themselves.
- Guilt is Guilt but why should the punishment severity be dependent on whether you support the Dem or Republican parties?
- Dems play politics as a life and death affair, while Republicans allow themselves to be pushed around by the media, Dems and fellow Republicans whether the Republicans are in the majority or minority of Congress.
- Political arguments are starved for facts both in rationale and argument point justification.
- Both Dems and Republicans whine but the Dems are louder and more effective at this game.
- Finally, none of these points are News!

Scooter Libby to jail is meaningless.
Free Paris Hilton! No rich heiress should be forced to sleep without silk bedding and forced to cry alone in jail.
Free Paris Hilton!

Libby should clearly go to jail despite the fact he is the 'fall guy' for higher ups. But it really doesn't matter as this nation stupified by the media would much rather care about a wreckless, thrill and attention seeking 'heiress' vs. any issues of substance that are plaguing this nation.

Hmm...jail for Libby, sounds good...I hear Paris needs a cellmate, this could work for everyone!
