Is the world getting better or worse?
From 1982 to 2006, the five-year survival rate for women with breast cancer rose from 74 percent to 98 percent, when the disease is caught early.
Since the start of the Iraq War, 3,060 Americans have been killed and 22,951 wounded. More than 35,000 Iraqi citizens have been killed as well.
This week, a partnership of U. S. businesses and environmental groups joined forces to call on the federal government to enact legislation requiring reductions of greenhouse gas emissions.
A Nature Conservancy study shows that 5,121 flowering plants are in danger of disappearing, mostly because of lost habitat and environmental pollutants. Meanwhile, the wolf population is coming back so strongly that it may soon be removed from the endangered list.
Wesley Autrey, a New York City construction worker and Navy veteran, threw himself on a stranger convulsing on the subway tracks, saving both their lives as five cars rolled inches above their heads.
A Boone County man was arrested Tuesday for posting Internet pictures of himself having sex with an 18-month-old girl. He has been charged with seven counts of sodomy and sexual abuse.
Every day, our world produces stories as diverse as these -- inspiring, discouraging, enlightening, disgusting.
Sometimes we as an editorial board toss around the question of whether the world, overall, is getting better or worse. Is civilization progressing or regressing? Are human beings becoming wiser and more civilized, or more brutal and debased?
Do you think of human life in those terms? Where do you come down on the issue, and what specific developments give you hope or leave you despairing?

The percentage of goodness versus evil in the world is no different today versus biblical times. The difference today is mass worldwide communication and the emphasis on reporting bad news. And what is noteworthy news…mostly the evil and abnormal behavior occurring anywhere in the world. So we over report evil actions; under report good news; and thus the exaggerated perception that all news is bad news.
But it is not true that all news is bad news. We need to individually seek out and only observe what is in front of our faces, in our own neighborhoods, to recognize that most news is good news, just not “news worthy”.
I disagree with it being all the media's fault. As a society, we're digressing. There's no religion or faith, no sacredness to marriage or vows and children are something that can be aborted at any given moment. Life, in general, is something that's completely disposable and people will take one without a second thought.
Pedophiles? I KNOW that there weren't so many 50 years ago. Internet brings out the worst in people who might have a tendency to do bad things. It makes it "easy" for them to bring their true colors to the forefront. 12 yr. old girls are right at their finger tips and their parents are no where in sight. Too busy making money to buy their Louis Vittons and SVU's.
Plus, the amount of mental illness these days and addictions are out of control. Maybe an evolutionary glitch? We can't control our lives and outside world so our coping mechanisms kick in and here come the medications to make us happy again.
EVERYONE feels like they are the STAR in this show that is life. They are number one and their children walk around with "princess" and "cutie" written across their behinds and we wonder why they grow up to be ineffective adults. Their kids act up in school and it's the teacher's fault. Their kids get caught in the crossfire while buying drugs and it's lack of police that's to blame. Personal responsiblity. Whatever happened to it?
After the Marcus Feisel case, I officially lost faith in the human race. We're slowly destroying ourselves and I just do the best to protect my children and the ones that I love. At times, I'm extremely overprotective but in this world, you HAVE to be. Otherwise you'll end up on the front of a newspaper or magazine. Or worse, on Nancy Grace.
Mrscabes, you have accurately communicated that there is evil in the world today.
However, I'm not sure there is any more degree of evil than in the past. The difference is that in the past, the media was not everywhere, to report and immediately disseminate the information. Crime often went unreported or mass media was not available to distribute it worldwide in the past.
Somewhat related, often the increases in crime and diseases reported today are not true increases but only acknowledgement that incidences of the past were not known or recorded.
Note to mrscabes:
Religion is not always the answer to societal ills...sometimes they add to the problem, so much as causing a war because "my religion/god is better than yours". Even the more "accepting" religions are not as non-judgmental as they claim...
To anon 1:55:
Out of all that I said, the one thing you got out of that was about religion?
No, religion isn't the end all and be all and a lot of things done "in the name of God" have been downright evil...but usually, if you have a higher faith, of any kind, you also have a deeper moral responsibility.
But, like I said, pedophiles didn't offend you, teenage girls acting nuts doesn't offend...but don't mention the word RELIGION! *GASP*
Here, let me say the word RELIGION. Let me say it proudly and without shame, and let me say the name above all names: JESUS CHRIST.
The way our world is working, progressing yet degenerating is EXACTLY as foretold in the Bible books of Revelation, Daniel, Isaiah, and others. Every single prophesy in the Bible has come true, every one.
That's why people are screaming to keep Jesus away from them so hard...they can't handle the truth. And in doing so, they are fulfilling exactly what the Bible said they'd do. They don't realize what they are actually doing, but in time they will know, and then it will be too late for them. This is not something mankind controls.
The way our world is going is the way God intended it to be, and for a good reason. This will end, too, as the book tells...remember, the Bible has a happy ending, after all. But we have a ways to go yet, and it's going to get MUCH worse first.
This is a Holy war, between God and Satan. We are the prize and the spoil of that war, not the main characters. So, make your choice whom you serve. As for my and my house, we will serve the Lord.
So if I don't believe your religion or read your holy book it will be “too late” for me? Isn’t that what anon 1:55 said? Just a question…
Hey anon@9:39 AM, January 30, 2007
You make God sound like an emotionally disturbed adolescent. I find it hard to believe that the supreme being would use his infinite wisdom and intelligence to create the entire universe ( including 'satan') only to then engage in a " Holy War" using the beings he created in his image like pawns in chess. Only according to you the outcome is predetermined. That would make God sort of a sadist as well, wouldn't it?
The God you describe sounds like some goofy 14-year-old kid playing a video game.
The fact that your interpretation of christianity is actually somewhat mainstream these days should concern us every bit as much as the " radical islamist " threat. You christian extremists are every bit as spooky as your muslim counterparts, IMHO.
