Why did you vote like that?

The war in Iraq.
Political scandals.
Hypocrisy.
Higher education funding.
A new jail.
Voters in Ohio, Northern Kentucky and the rest of the country spoke on all these issues Tuesday at the polls. What were you saying? Sunday's Forum section hopes to answer some of those questions and look to the future as well. Thursdays editorial, "Voters' messages and challenges," asks you to talk about issues such as what do we do about jail overcrowding, how do we fund higher education and what do Democrats and Republicans need to do to avoid gridlock for the next two years? Go to Cincinnati.com, Keyword: elections 2006, to respond or send a letter to letters@enquirer.com. We look forward to the discussion.

i voted against the jail issue because it was combined with a property tax decrease. if you need money for something than ask for it, don't try and bribe me with a phony giveback.

As the previous poster stated, I too voted against the jail levy because of the property tax roll back. How long is it going to be before the roll-back for the stadiums is removed because of declining revenue? We don't need trickery and deceit when the politicos need money...just the honest facts, please. Treat us like we have some brains. Portune and Pepper have an opportunity here - I hope they use it wisely.

for those who voted against the jail....

Yes, it wasn't the best plan. I was behind the plan proposed by Ms. Ghiz and Mr. Berding - and I hope that is again looked at. The plan presented in the jail tax proposal wouldn't have helped in our overcrowding problems for at least 5 years.

But I voted for it because WE NEED MORE JAIL SPACE. I'm all for rehabilitation, education and economic programs, but WE NEED MMORE JAIL SPACE.

The revolving door, lowered or dropped charges procedure currently in place has got to stop, but it won't because WE NEED MORE JAIL SPACE.

And contrary to popular belief, that space is NOT being taken up by low level drug charges - unless it's on someone who already has a long history with the justice system and this was a violation of community control.

For all who voted against this or believe we do NOT need more jail space, spend some time in Court. Go down and sit in one of the courtrooms where the judge has 100 cases to get through in one day. Listen to all the plea bargaining, dropping of charges, etc.
Then follow someone who is actually put IN jail, and see how their sentence is shortened by 2X1 or 3X1 days served.

WE NEED MORE JAIL SPACE!

I voted Democratic to "throw the bums out." Since power corrupts, etc., I expect to vote Republican in 10 years for the same reason.

Oh, really!? Well, if you know for sure that jail space is not being taken up by people with "low level drug charges" why don't you tell us who is taking up the space. What are the facts?

And while you are giving us some facts (something that should have been provided BEFORE the election), how about telling us how much it will cost to build a new jail? How much to operate it? Where is it going to be located?

Mr. Livingston:

You know quite well what the convictions are of those "taking up space" in the Justice Center, or at least you should.
IF someone is put into the Justice Center on low level drug charges, it is because they have violated Community Control prohibitions by being caught with said drugs.
You also are quite well aware of the "revolving door" happening at the court room where charges are lowered or dropped. How many weapons under disability and / or conceal carries have YOU seen prosecuted and not plea bargained recently.?
How much will it cost to build a new jail? Depends on the plan. I believe the plan put forth by Ms. Ghiz and Mr. Berding was to have been approx 6 million. Money that can NOT be used by the city to send prisoners to Butler County, etc.
Now answer a question for me, Mr. Livingston? How much is the life of a young, African American male worth to you? After all, with 2 exceptions this calendar year, it's been young, African American males that have been killed on the streets of Cincinnati. And where we have convictions, mostly by other young, African American males. Are you saying it's better to keep on with the killings than to build a jail to keep these murders in?
