So who missed the election as 'lesson'?
In one of the chili-pepper hottest elections of our time -- the 2004 race between George Bush and John Kerry -- almost half of all teenagers nationally said they hadn't discussed the issue at school, according to ABC News poll released shortly before that election.
It's enough to make Maria Montessori -- the Italian educator who coined the term, 'the teachable moment' -- turn over in her grave.
Local high school students who took part in our panel discussion on the election, and those who emailed, blogged or posted their thoughts on our message board about it, said teaching about the election was generally spotty at their schools as well. But those students who had teachers who were passionate about discussing the election caught fire about the candidates, issues and process.
So, teachers and students out there, tell us. Are you discussing the elections in class this fall? And if not, why on earth not?

Ms. Ramsey, what you are describing is called " dumbing down". Think of The Enlightenment in reverse - and on fastforward speed. We are in a place and time, so bizarre - the word 'Elitist' is defined as those people observant and articulate enough to say, " the emperor is naked".

I heard on the radio last week... A college junior--and POLITICAL SCIENCE MAJOR--DID NOT KNOW WHO THE VP is...
What hope is there?
Oh yeah? 'man on street'? well sit down and hold on to your hat, because we have a PRESIDENT that did not know: there's 2 kinda muslims .. them sunnis and shia -whatcha-call 'ems - until it was explained to him - in the oval office!
That's just starters!
How did this happen? Twice! ( his election and reecletion.) It's scary. Are people confusing his blatant stupidity with 'populism'?
He's NOT a folksy down home kinda guy from Crawford - he's a genuine idiot! - from an old money family. Was he dropped on his head as baby? Ate paint chips? WHAT?
Oh, but he's an intellectual stud behind closed doors. His IQ rises 20 points when Nobody's lookin! Boolcrap! I ain't buying that line no more!
interesting you should mention maria montessori. my kids attend clark montessori in cincinnati, the 1st montessori public high school in the united states, and they do discuss current events.
on the other hand, it would probably send a chill down the local conservatives and theocrats back bone because, surprise, montessori teachers tend to teach peace and harmony and how to get along with the rest of the planet.
one can only wonder what twisted views jennifer miller on the mason school board would want taught. after all, she's already rewritten history to prove that we are a christian nation, and the enquirer supports this view by continuing to publish letters that endorse that perspective. i would personally rather have my kids dumbed down than taught nonsense.
The Enquirer missed the last election when they failed to fully investigate a story they broke only because it dropped into their laps when the Warren County BoE initially refused admission to the building to all the reporters, TV, newspapers and AP who drove there to witness the tabulation of the vote. Standing in a foyer 2 floors below the tabulation room is not sufficient.
The excuse? A level 10 terror threat according to Frank Young Emergency Services Director who refused to name the Homeland Security/FBI agent he claims to have personally communicated with.
Thank God this state has a a paper that does investigate scandala at the highest level of our state government. Unfortunately we can't expect the Toledo Blade to investigate wrongdoing in SW Ohio.
Fortunately avaerage citizens did inspect the ballots in Warren County using FOIA requests. Not surprisingly the ballots they inspected did show very predictable anomalies. Add this to the statistical anomalies in severl Southwestern Ohio counties and you do have smoke.
Oh well. It's just our democracy.
The Jennifer Millers of the world are the main reason for the dumbing down of public education. Teachers are intimidated when right-wing religious nuts are constantly looking over their shoulders and second-guessing them. Can you imagine the hassle it would be in Mason to try to teach about freedom of speech and separation of church and state, not to mention evolution?
RICK SAID: how would you handle planes piloted by terrorists coming here to kill us?
Well Rick - People don't generally kill others in such a calculated and deliberate way (such as 9/11) for trivial reasons. Such as " they can't stand our values and hate our way of life" as we are told. At least it would seem to me. The act of flying planes into buildings ( terrorism)is and always has been, the tactics of those who are reacting to something that is happening in/near their homeland - not ours. You don't invade and conquer by flying planes into buildings and blowing yourself up!
Historically, when people commit terroist acts they are telling you to STOP doing this or that, leave us alone, or get out and so on.
So, to answer your question: how do we handle it? We ask ourselves: is it in America's vital interests to continue engaging in the activites that make them want to kill us. If Yes. then we fight them. If No, we stop doing what it is that is hacking them off!
