More gas: Are oil companies shooting straight?
This commentary is pretty dense, but you'll find a strong argument that Big Oil is playing fast-and-loose with the public when it claims its profits aren't out of line. The author, lawyer Henry Banta, also blames the media for failing to dig deep enough.
One paragraph that got my attention:
There are other issues raised by the industry’s propaganda offensive, like the amounts being reinvested. While these numbers in absolute terms seem large, over the last several years the actual rate of reinvestment has not been particularly high. In fact, the major companies have spent considerable sums buying back their own stock. For example, ExxonMobil’s capital and exploration expenditures in 2007 were $20.9 billion. But it spent $31.8 billion buying back its own stock, which certainly did nothing for meeting anyone’s energy needs.
It's worth a read. And, while we're on the subject of the media and oil, here's a piece from the same Web site, niemanwatchdog.org, with 10 questions to ask about oil and gas prices. For example: Why aren't any new refineries being built in the U.S.?
5 Comments:
Take every dollar of profit from all oil companies and each US citizen gets $100-$200. Of course all R&D efforts stop.
We need to be independent from foreign oil sources. PERIOD.
Drill off Calif. Drill in Gulf of Mexico as other nations are doing. Drill in ALaska reserves. Convert oil shale. Support Hydrogen fuel car technology. Support EVs.
But looking to blame others for our stupidity to change 10 years ago when we knew problems were coming and continuing to avoid change today is not a solution.
Quit this victimization garbage and rollout real solutions. Not this garbage of starving the world by burning inefficient corn food stock in our tanks.
Rely on science and common sense and stop the stupid politics. We need solutions.
Electric cars? The technology is there. Wind farming? The technology has been there since B.C. Solar? Bio fuels? Combinations of all the above?
It's all within our grasp.
New, motivated, less lobby-bound political leadership? Ah, human corruption; now that's going to be hard to change. The most lobbied-up of all? John McCain......check it out.
what if we stop this crazy war and take the billions we're spending on that and subsidize gas! I know, I sound really selfish! I can't imagine what we're spending compared to the population of that country. We need to get out and let them fight thier own battles!
We should abandon Iraq. like 4:13pm says. We've done it before. Besides, Pol Pot wnd the Killing Fields was just a million person dream of the dead.
Subsidize gas? Tax gas, you mean. Starve the gas gluttons, slowly, but surely.
Definitely out of Iraq, but admit our incompetence, (Dick Cheney et al. are not George Marshall, that's for sure....) and do it carefully instead of blaming the victims. Saddam had the warring tribes under control, didn't he? Just like all other totalitarians he had a clear picture of base human nature, and chose a very practical, if immoral way to deal with it. WE HAD NOTHING in mind, except theft of their natural resources and a bee in our collective bonnet about Sept. 11 with which they had NOTHING to do. NOTHING ELSE IN MIND. We are colonialists disguised as capitalists. Six of one.
