Lack of support

Prosecutors in Hamilton County called the numbers former Bengals linebacker James Francis put up “obscene.”

They weren’t talking about sacks, but about child support. According to Jeffrey Startzman, director of the Child Support Enforcement Agency, Francis owes $900,000 in back support for two children, a local record.

Now the county has Francis in jail and means to collect of keep him locked up. He is due for a hearing Wednesday. He had plenty of chances to pay up, but apparently ignored previously warnings and warrants.

Child support can be contested or modified, but it cannot be ignored.

whats obscene is that the prosecutors can pick out someone special and do this. no way, no how does it cost 900K to support a child. lets get real.

It doesn't matter whether Francis owes $900k or $20k. He has a childcare support legal obligation and he chose to ignore, flee, and pay zero support. Nice Daddy!

let me get this right. you have a gripe about the dollar amount of a child support judgement. so in your mind, its ok to pay nothing/zero/zilch for the children you fathered. are you fighting the law or your 4 and 6 year old children you abandoned?

thats one way to teach them a lesson of life.

i'm not fighting anything. i just thinks its wrong to make an example of francis. i don't know his martial status and whether his kids are legitimate or not, but this smells like an ex-wife got a good lawyer and robbed him blind using the kids as a way to get to him. thats just wrong.

He clearly is being made an example of. This organization is part of the same group that has gotten foster kids killed (Marcus Feisel), placed children with felons and they are desperate to show they have some clout. They don't. No one goes 900k in arrears without these hunchbacks catching them. I have a client who was accused of being $493.00 in arrears and they froze his personal accounts. You read that right, 493.00. He never missed a support payment ever (its documented) So its a stretch that he is running from anything. He is being targeted. What will be interesting is when his football career is over can he get the support order adjusted? dont hold your breath. He is being set up to be destroyed and made an example of.

I don't understand the last two. It doesn't matter if your were married or not when you fathered the kids. There are DNA tests.

If you think the award is too high, fine. But shouldn't you at least pay your child something monthly? $1000 per month shows some compansion for the kids versus choosing to pay nothing and running from the law.

It might not be obvious to some, but perhaps one of the reasons he did not pay the 900K would be that he did not have it? There are many cases of people making "good" money but still living paycheck to paycheck like most poor people because of bad financial choices and their consequences. In this case, Francis is no longer an overpaid sports superstar. He has no way in the world of paying such an amount without resorting to bank robbery. On a broader note, child support is completely out of wack in most cases today. No matter how much a parent makes, they should not be forced to pay more than they can afford, and they certainly should not be paying sums that most full-time working adults don't make in a year.
