Karl Rove's leaving
Karl Rove, President Bush's leading political strategist, described in the title of a book by James Moore and Wayne Slater as "Bush's Brain," has decided to leave the administration by the end of the month. Read Paul Gigot's interview with him in the Wall Street Journal here.
Rove has been demonized by many as a sort of evil Rasputin character who pulls the President's strings. He was the the guy who dreamed of a "permanent majority" for the Republicans. His leaving will be a cause of joy for administration opponents.
His official explanation is that he wants to spend more time with his family, but there are two basic lines of reasoning about why he is going now:
#1--George Bush's political life is essentially now over. He's a lame duck president with no more elections to look forward to, so it is time for Machiavelli -- er, Rove -- to seek another prince.
#2--Although he didn't get indicted in Plamegate, there are plenty of Democrats now controlling Congress who still want to bring him down, so he is leaving town one step ahead of the posse.
What's everybody think?

I dunno. But having to spend the rest of his life being known as "Bush's Brain" should be punishment enough for anything he may or may not have done.
Wanna bet he's got a blanket pardon tucked away already?
If Rove is Bush's Brain, wtf is Cheney, his conscience?
he can run but he can't hide.
I hope the Bush haters live long enough to learn and realize how much more favorably history will treat his presidency's legacy and fight against terrorism versus the libs dim witted views of today.
the only people that will think bush has a favorable legacy are the same dimwits who think the earth is 6000 years old.
bush/rove/cheney are the low point in american history. they prove that absolute power corrupts absolutely. end of discussion.

It would be a wonderful thing to live that long, but with inflation and all, I probably can't afford to live until I'm 500 yrs old.
A well written tribute by famous conservative Andrew Sullivan:
The man's legacy is a conservative movement largely discredited and disunited, a president with lower consistent approval ratings than any in modern history, a generational shift to the Democrats, a resurgent al Qaeda, an endless catastrophe in Iraq, a long hard struggle in Afghanistan, a fiscal legacy that means bankrupting America within a decade, and the poisoning of American religion with politics and vice-versa. For this, he got two terms of power - which the GOP used mainly to enrich themselves, their clients and to expand government's reach and and drain on the productive sector. In the re-election, the president with a relatively strong economy, and a war in progress, managed to eke out 51 percent. Why? Because Rove preferred to divide the country and get his 51 percent, than unite it and get America's 60. In a time of grave danger and war, Rove picked party over country. Such a choice was and remains despicable.
Rove is one of the worst political strategists in recent times...
famous conservative Andrew Sullivan? Who?
This Bush hatred is a blinding mask that preys on the weak who look at others for causes of their personal failures. Yet your mirror seldom lies.
JohnDWoods has acknowledged that with the review of history, Bush will be viewed favorably. Seems remarkable that this critic realizes how wrong and short-sighted his opinions are today.
Good riddance, Rove. Don't let the door hit you in the backside on the way out...and don't bother to wait for August 31, leave NOW.
anon@8:56 PM - Are you saying that people who do not like this president and the policies of his administration are suffering from some sort of personality disorder?
This is the sort of thing that many cults say about former members. Spooky.
Considering the number of American jobs lost to China, and to illegal immigrants from Mexico, perhaps Bush's historical legacy will be treated favorably....in hina and Mexico.
Anon 12:12 PM...........Did Bush cause Clinton to enact NAFTA? Facts are rare among Libs.
Hillary in 08. What could be more frightening...or further from "the truth"??
