Zips and dips

Great story on Friday's Enquirer.com about Chris Torbeck's iconic soft-serve Zip Dip and the government bureaucracy's effort to grind him down out in Green Township.

Except that the bureaucrats seem like human beings, Torbeck doesn't sound bitter and there is a grain of sense in all that government grinding. The ice cream store is a non-conforming use, which means because Torbeck altered his operation by adding some picnic tables he has to comply with current zoning laws. That means eventually he will have to move the shop a safer distance back from the curb of busy Harrison Avenue. I hope this move toward safety, which nobody is making him do immediately, won't put him out of business. Places like Zip Dip deserve to be cherished by the ice cream lovers of future generations.

The planning and zoning officials only want people to be safe. But there is one grain of sand in their soft serve. Zoning regs will require elimination of Zip Dip's rooftop neon ice cream cone sign when the building is moved. The community should insist on a waiver for this one or march on the courthouse with dripping cones in hand.

With all the senseless development along Harrison Avenue, places like Zip Dip are being run over and good neighbors like Torbeck are being forced to conform. Traffic will only get worse along the strip. It's a shame that all his efforts at maintaining a small, but responsible business are going to be belittled by the super-sized shopping mall. It's a shame that nice places like Green Township can't manage to maintain a small-business, small-town feel.

Is it possible to connect Colerain and Harrison Avenues as they become one in the same?

The Green Township Trustees are too busy hiring lawyers to steal land from private citizens, such as Mr. Rack's land, to bother helping a small business with zoning and red tape.

Without going into specifics, the courts have ruled that you can not "bully" citizens with Eminent Domain.

Green Township Trustees are not friendly to most small businesses.

Chuck Mitchell, Tracy Winkler, and Anthony Upton would rather talk and newsletter about the non-revenue generating green-space parks they are confiscating from private citizens.

Hopefully Todd Portune will be able to help Zip-Dip because the Green Township Trustees are too busy with Eminent Domain, patrolling small business for ad sign violations, and running for re-election.

Unfortunately, we have been plagued with poor leadership on the Westside of Cincinnati for years. Green Township will soon join Price Hill and Westwood.

It’s a shame. We have excellent local examples of how to run government with Mason, West Chester, and Blue Ash. But we hear the same politicians give the same excuses of not being able to raise income tax and that our residential base is conservative senior citizens. What a crock of …!

Excuses abound, while leadership and manageable solutions are ignored. But we elect these weak Green Township leaders, so we are responsible too.

While green township officials do nothing Todd Portune will solve this problem, created by government. At least someone is looking out for the little guy.

I think Green Township administration is useless too. They don't help small business. They just point their fingers at and blame Hamilton County or Ohio State officials and codes. They have “not my job not my fault” syndrome!
